    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I found the work very engaging and interesting giving me a real sense of what life would be like as an actuary. I managed to get fully stuck into several different projects working with data from start to finish giving me the chance to see many different aspects of the business and role of the reserving team.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt that my work was well valued by the team and, in particular, my manager as I was able to get heavily involved in an important analysis project that was been undertaken at the time. I really felt like part of the team!

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a great level of support and training by not only my manager but also by other colleagues who were able to help me understand more about the work of the reserving team and some more specific guidance for the projects I was working on. Overall there was the perfect amount of support giving me the opportunity to figure things out for myself as well.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • On the whole I was just busy enough, although there were some fluctuations in how busy I was generally I had a nice amount of work to do meaning I was able to work through it well, keeping to deadlines while spending enough time on each piece of work to ensure I was able to complete it to the best of my abilities.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a good level of responsibility taking ownership of my work and ways of working as well as organising my daily schedule all without being overburdened. Overall, I was very happy with the level of responsibility given.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Some of the practical skills I learnt have already been useful in just the few months after I finished, including some of the excel skills that have proved very useful in my final year project. I know that so many of the other skills I learnt over the 8 weeks will be of so much use in the future, especially in a job after university.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office had a great atmosphere, a mix between serious, focused work and a more light hearted side, socialising over lunch for example. It was a nice office to work in with everyone being very warm and welcoming.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was well organised, the online testing and interview process was well communicated and done quickly which was much appreciated Overall I felt prepared to start work on the first day and the support continued throughout the placement so I couldn't have asked for more.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I think Hiscox invested significantly as I undertook several training modules and courses both online and in person. These were interesting and useful, particularly an in person one organised for all interns.

  • There was a good opportunity to socialise with the other interns as well as colleagues in my department. This was really nice to be apart of, especially as I was living away from home for the summer. Everyone was so friendly and it was easy getting to know them!
