The Role
It was a really interesting placement that was at times challenging but this only made it more rewarding.
Everyone made a real effort early on to welcome me and were very friendly.
All senior staff were available to talk to and would happily provide guidance and encouragement as when needed but were equally happy to trust that I would perform without intervention.
I always had plenty of work to do but if it ever started to feel like too much I could discuss this with my line manager and get certain tasks reassigned.
The role I was performing allowed me a great deal of freedom to work in the way I found best and I was given a similar level of responsibility as those who has worked in the company for many years.
I was given a good grounding for a future career in procurement and was also given opportunities to experience other areas of the business.
The Company
Everyone was friendly as it is an open plan office but at the same time it is still a professional environment where work is the priority.
I was provided with a full induction on arrival introduced to all of the team, given opportunities to visit the other main sites and had regular meetings with my line manager where I could discuss any concerns.
There were a number of mandatory training courses that I was required to attend and there was also access to a wide range of optional courses that I was able to take. All other members of staff were also happy to take time to explain new concepts to me and give guidance where necessary.

I have been offered sponsorship for my final year at Uni which in addition to the money guarantees me a graduate interview.
The Culture
There is an employee run club called Steps which all new starters are invited to and representatives from this attend the induction to welcome you to Dstl and they run regular social events.
I lived in Southsea in Portsmouth so the beach was right on my doorstep along with several main nightlife areas. The prices were very reasonable considering the southern location.
There are many employee run clubs who are always open to new members.
