The Role
Loved working as part of the PowerVR WDDM graphics driver development team on their latest project. Got to work with the latest tech and commit code into the main branch so it's really exciting to be involved in a major real-world product. Loved the relaxed environment, everyone is really friendly - couldn't ask for a nicer working environment really! This was not a "fetch me coffee" internship - this was proper work :) Company was very helpful in finding me another employee to car share with so I could get to work.
Great group of guys - really helpful and definitely appreciated the work I was doing. They worked well to give me challenging tasks I could do but that weren't too far beyond my knowledge. Great group to work with!
I got given a desk next to the guy who I was assigned to work with. He answered all my questions and gave me great guidance when things got too complicated or my lack of knowledge of graphics drivers blocked me. He explained everything in more than enough detail and I now have a much greater understanding of what I was working with.
Never overworked but never under-worked either - a nice relaxed environment/culture.
While not "running the show" I was programming plenty of stuff for myself and sending it to the review board (as all employees do) and checking it into the main branch - so quite a lot of responsibility really. I was also managing quite a bit of exactly which tasks I did and when.
Gave me many many new business/work skills which will be very useful in my technology future - things like Source Control, project management, how a business is actually structured and business strategy. Along with individual time planning and project tracking. Also gave me quite a lot of new programming skills/tool knowledge (I learnt C, C++ and Python on-the-job quite easily!).
The Company
Fun atmosphere with plenty of laughs (not at any particular person's expense amazingly! :D )
Seamless aside from failure on my part (one of the buildings has a very confusing layout but you get used to it!)
They gave me many hours of help and guidance along with various group training sessions to get me started with all the software I had to use. I always had my colleague working behind me so I could just turn around and ask questions!
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
They've said they will probably offer me more work next year (and asked if I wanted to shift into a different team to better match my future career ideas) and they have a track record of offering jobs to interns.
The Culture
Social scene was good - plenty of interns who were students and/or who had been before so they organised lots of events for all interns to meet up and get to know eachother. Shame I wasn't here longer so I could go to more!
I lived at home and commuted in to Kings Langley from Enfield by car sharing so not too costly and the local pubs etc. are reasonably priced.
No idea so I've left this answer as average.
A fair few opportunities though many you could only attend if you can stay late or go home at a flexible time.
