    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The company is great to work for, the developers here are smart and know what they are doing. I got challenging work sometimes, but I did get some boring tasks.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Some of my colleagues treated me as a proper engineer, these are the guys who I been working with for a year. However some of the other engineers from other teams treated me as proper student, they gave me simple tasks like testing and spoke down to me.

    2/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Management gave me a lot of support but most of my support came from my Team Leader. He was the guy who assigned me work, helped me develop and spoke to me daily. My manager seems to be there just to make sure I kept to company rules, I didn't really see why I needed him.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Over the last 12 months I have had busy periods, so busy that I have had to stay late until the evening. These moments are rare. I have spent easily 75% of the time bored or doing simple tasks that other developers do not want to do. This is due to the amount of work available, there isn't much. The company has made cut backs but there is still no work around.

    1/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility. I was in charge of software releases and testing procedures. Other developers would ask me questions like I was the lead developer of the application.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have got a good experience in a working environment. I haven't really increased my Programming knowledge.

    3/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • My colleagues can have a laugh. The office has a friendly atmosphere and has a chilled out dress code. However during my placement the company made cutbacks which effected office atmosphere. There was a lot of guessing work as people didn't know what was happening. There was a feeling no one wanted to work because they might not be here.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Organisation of my placement was good. Human Resources made sure that there was no issues.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • No outside training but other developers did spend their time teaching me anything I was stuck on.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would not take a job in the future because I don't think the company is stable. I wouldn't want to start a job to then leave after a few months.

    1/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was the occasional night out with people from work, the other students didn't really socialize but I think that was a one of, guessing from the stories from the year before the students were always out. There are alot of sport clubs, I think there was a football evening and a squash league.

    2/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The pay was good however I had to rent a 1 bedroom flat because other students didn't want to share. You can rent a 2 bedroom or even 3 bedroom quite cheaply. The area itself is cheap, travel is cheap (trains) and beer is a decent price.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife in the surrounding towns is quite good, Leeds is only 30 minutes on the train from Steeton. If you was to live in Steeton there is only one pub as its a village.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Apart from sports there was no other work activities planned.
