The Role
I had a great year in the Marketing Programmes department, the team were really supportive and I felt I was given more work/responsibility than I expected.
My department was quite small and therefore we have a close bond which I enjoyed as we did social activities outside of work including London to Brighton bike ride.
I had regular catch up meetings with my line manager in which I could express any concerns I had and also speak about projects I wanted to work on during my placement year.
I think my workload varied, the role changed since I began which allowed me to come up with new projects which was necessary as some aspects of my role which were manual are now system based.
Some of the reporting I completed was important to the retailer network however compared to other undergraduates I think I could have had slightly more responsibility which was highlighted to my line manager.
My Excel skills improved considerably due to Excel training provided by Vauxhall and also my job required a fair amount of Excel anyway. Hopefully this will help in my final year at university and for future job roles. We were also provided with Presentation training and had to complete three 'Who am I' presentations during the year to senior management which I found particularly helpful.
The Company
The department I worked in was probably one of the most relaxed and friendly and we also went out after work to celebrate occassions.
The beginning of our placement was very well organised with the handover period helping us to get settled into our departments and with the other undergraduates.
As I mentioned before we were provided with Excel and Presentation training which was great and I was encouraged to meet with other departments and visit retailers to understand more about Vauxhall.
Subsidised Canteen
Vauxhall are not known for taking on many graduates so there are limited opportunities after university.
The Culture
As there were about 80 people on placement in Bedfordshire the social side was great as most weekends there were birthdays and nights out planned.
Luton is cheap to live as far as the south is concerned rent is no more than £300 per month and nights out are really cheap too.
There is only 1 club in Luton but Watford and London are close by which are much better nights out.
The activities were aimed towards the guys on placement for example football tournaments.
