About You
A fantastic balance of developing new/existing skills, gaining valuable classroom experience and meeting inspiring people.
The majority of ambassadors made us feel like we were already a part of the organisation and already teachers.
I could not fault this. On top of the wealth of information received in training workshops, if you had a question/concern at any point, Teach First ambassadors were practically queuing up to talk to you and answer your questions as fully as possible.
The process of receiving information and then putting it into practice in a classroom setting brought my leadership and communication skills on leaps and bounds- these are skills that are universally applicable.
The Company
A few days of information, workshops and planning and then a few days in a placement school to apply all of the knowledge and skills learnt previously.
All Teach First ambassadors and interns alike were enthusiastic, friendly and a pleasure to be around.
A large amount of varied training sessions and workshops, and the opportunity to teach 'real life' lessons to pupils!
While it is hard to know exactly how much contact/quality of contact I would have with TF when working in a school full-time, I obtained a really insightful feel of what it is like to work at that school, and what life may look like outside of the academic hours.
The interaction with so many people that have come through the programme really helps with this.
Whilst I realise that teaching's not for me, I really can't stress enough how perfect this opportunity was to make me realise this. I was very 50/50 prior to this experience, but the insight was ideal to help address this uncertainty and give you solid reasons why the career is or is not right for you.
Everything Else
TF paid for a really pleasant hostel for the handful of us interns that were not from London and had nowhere we could stay for the 10 days. Also, we were given very reasonable expenses for food and, if applicable, travel.
Many! I actually came away from the programme sad to be saying goodbye to the good friends I did absolutely everything with for the last week and a half. I think that due to the nature of the career, it attracts some really memorable individuals.
Ambassadors encouraged us to join them for numerous Q&A sessions after the day of workshops or day of school. This was a great opportunity to get to know everybody a little more in a more relaxed environment. Honestly, you feel very 'adult' going to the pub for a swift half with the others after a long day at work and, personally, I could adapt to this lifestyle very quickly.
This is tricky as it depends entirely on the area in which you are placed at a school. At our placement school, we learnt of a few activities.
For anybody considering being a teach, you will benefit massively from this insight; for anybody certain they want to teach, I cannot recommend Teach First highly enough and this insight will have you biting at the bit to start teaching.
