The Role
I enjoyed learning various techniques and becoming part of the working environment. It was good getting an insight into this type of work
After a few months I had the same responsibilities as my colleagues so they trusted me to do the work correctly but would also help if I was struggling
My supervisor tried to find me a project to do as this was part of my degree requirements but it was difficult as this is a non research site.
For the first month or two had a lot of spare time where I had not been fully trained so there wasn't a lot I could do but once fully trained I could easily fill my days.
Once fully trained I had the same responsibilities as my colleagues so my work was trusted to be accurate.
I have learnt how to work accurately and efficiently as well as working as part of a team. In addition I now know how to operate various pieces of machinery such as HPLCs. These skills will help me in future jobs however I would like to pursue a career in research which may require different skills.
The Company
During the day when there were plenty of people around there was a fun atmosphere in the labs but as I worked as a small shift team the early mornings and late nights could be a bit dull when there was only 1 other person in the lab.
The actual placement was straightforward and I blended in very well. I found it hard finding a project as this was a non-research site so I wouldn't recommend this placement for someone who needs to do some kind of project but would recommend it if a person just wanted a year in industry
I was trained as any other member of staff would be
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
It was hinted at that if there was a place available after I had finished my degree then I could return.
The Culture
I was the only placement student but a lot of my colleagues were near my age and some lived near me so we sometimes went out together.
I stayed near my university and thus commuted to work each day. The train journeys cost quite a lot. There were however places available to stay near the company
Didn't go out in Queenborough as it is only a small town with a pub or 2
