The Role
I had responsibility, challenged intellectually, welcomed socially and developed personally.
Many did not realise that I was just a placement student, and gave me the same respect they would give any other co-worker. Never did i feel patronised.
My manager would talk to me daily to discuss the day's work and progress.
When there was work to be done, I could be there til late in the evening. But it was balanced by the times when things were quiet, and I could sneak off early!
Although a lot of data entry was involved, it required detailed knowledge. The job was a part of ensuring a safe railway, i was a small cog in an important system. It was rewarding to be doing something useful.
My Excel skills were off the wall by the time I left! Also, I left able to deal with responsibility. Also learning to plan projects and activities is a very useful skill.
The Company
On occasions tense, but soon returned to the friendly banter!
Some projects seemed a bit aimless, or perhaps beyond my level of knowledge. But the day to day work was perfect.
As a company, i don't think a great deal. Individually, colleagues and managers were all very keen for me to learn new things, and get involved as much as possible.
Above 25 days holiday
Healthcare/Dental
I have since been back for summer work. I like the industry, the company, the location and the staff. But it might be nice to try a different environment.
The Culture
The Year In Industry students were introduced to the recent graduate intake and a year of jokes and drinks followed. Returned for a summer placement to end up working for my old mates!
Canary Wharf is no place for students!
A few drinks after work, but head into central London for late night activities.
There's amateur football, charity events. My favourite was a dragon boat race against other companies in Canary Wharf, we came second and raised £600 at the same time!
