    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I had responsibility, challenged intellectually, welcomed socially and developed personally.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Many did not realise that I was just a placement student, and gave me the same respect they would give any other co-worker. Never did i feel patronised.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager would talk to me daily to discuss the day's work and progress.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • When there was work to be done, I could be there til late in the evening. But it was balanced by the times when things were quiet, and I could sneak off early!

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Although a lot of data entry was involved, it required detailed knowledge. The job was a part of ensuring a safe railway, i was a small cog in an important system. It was rewarding to be doing something useful.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My Excel skills were off the wall by the time I left! Also, I left able to deal with responsibility. Also learning to plan projects and activities is a very useful skill.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • On occasions tense, but soon returned to the friendly banter!

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Some projects seemed a bit aimless, or perhaps beyond my level of knowledge. But the day to day work was perfect.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As a company, i don't think a great deal. Individually, colleagues and managers were all very keen for me to learn new things, and get involved as much as possible.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Above 25 days holiday

    Healthcare/Dental

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I have since been back for summer work. I like the industry, the company, the location and the staff. But it might be nice to try a different environment.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The Year In Industry students were introduced to the recent graduate intake and a year of jokes and drinks followed. Returned for a summer placement to end up working for my old mates!

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Canary Wharf is no place for students!

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • A few drinks after work, but head into central London for late night activities.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There's amateur football, charity events. My favourite was a dragon boat race against other companies in Canary Wharf, we came second and raised £600 at the same time!
