  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • In my role, I oversee a variety of tasks related to water management. This entails activities such as strategic asset planning, flood barrier design, analysing water resources and flooding impacts, hazards and dangerous sources within a site, designing pumping stations and treatment plants, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. On a daily basis, I engage in project management, problem-solving, design work, and communication with clients and colleagues to ensure successful project execution and delivery.

  • Certainly, my experience in this role has significantly contributed to my growth as an engineer. I've honed my technical skills in various aspects of water engineering, such as flood barrier design, and water treatment plant optimisation. Additionally, I've deepened my understanding of project management, teamwork, and effective communication, which are all crucial skills in the engineering field. This continuous learning and skill development empower me to tackle diverse engineering challenges with confidence and expertise.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • My internship provided me with substantial responsibilities. I was entrusted with tasks ranging from conducting independent DSEAR reports and analysis, contributing to design decisions to actively participating in client meetings and collaborating within cross-functional teams. This hands-on experience allowed me to not only apply my knowledge but also develop a strong sense of ownership and accountability for the projects I was involved in.

  • During my internship, I was fortunate to receive comprehensive support and guidance. From the outset, I was assigned a line manager and buddy who provided valuable insights, answered my questions, and offered constructive feedback on my work. Additionally, the team fostered an open environment where I could seek assistance from colleagues whenever needed. Regular check-ins, training sessions, and collaborative discussions ensured that I had the necessary resources and guidance to excel in my role and contribute effectively to the projects I was part of.

  • The company culture and general atmosphere were both highly conducive to growth and collaboration. Colleagues were friendly, approachable and willing to share their expertise, creating an environment where learning from one another was encouraged. The emphasis on innovation and problem-solving contributed to a dynamic atmosphere, and regular team interactions, both formal and informal. Overall, the company culture was one that promoted both personal development and collective success.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed my internship experience. The opportunity to apply my engineering knowledge to real-world projects was immensely fulfilling. The challenges I encountered were balanced by the satisfaction of contributing to meaningful outcomes and witnessing tangible results. The supportive team, engaging projects, and the chance to learn from experienced professionals made the experience both enjoyable and enriching. It solidified my passion for the field and provided a valuable foundation for my career in engineering.
