Software Engineering and Testing Review

I collaborated with my team members to write backend jobs to process the large volume of data moving through the payment processing system. I wrote jobs in spark scala, and created unit and integration tests to ensure a high standard of code quality and reliability. I participated in a fast paced agile methodology, contributing to team meetings and creating stories.

I've learnt how to effectively use spark scala to process large amounts of data moving through a hadoop focused system. By participating in an agile scrum methodology I've become confident in creating and completing clear stories. I've learnt a lot about payment processing systems, and the finance industry.

In my internship I was responsible for the project I was delivering, therefore to do so I often had to communicate with other team members to ask questions or be mentored about the internal systems/technologies. I was supported in all these tasks, held accountable and recognised for the work I was doing.

I received a large amount of support and guidance. A mentor was assigned to me from within the team, who undertook a large amount of effort to teach me about internal and external systems, business purposes, and technology alongside my line manager. The entire team was highly supportive, taking time to answer questions or explain concepts. I was also assigned a mentor external to the team who I was able to discuss my progress with.

The office has a fast paced but supporting company culture, that encourages improving your own skills at a sustainable place. There were many social events run in and outside of work hours to socialize and get to know members of other teams.

I highly enjoyed my internship, both when working on highly technical problems that challenged me and motivated me to improve, and when collaborating with my team members who were supportive and friendly. The social opportunities ensured that I was able to continually meet new people, and develop my network of colleagues.

Visa did a fantastic job supporting the interns, and the internship programmed was very well designed. More social opportunities organised to connect the interns from different office locations in the UK would have been nice.
