The Role
The type of work I had was really diverse allowing me to work on a large range of vehicles running an equally large range of tests.
At first, I worked as a technician, but after 5 months I moved into the engineers role and had lots of my own jobs making me feel valued just like the other, more senior, engineers.
Whenever I needed help or had a question, there was always someone there to help me.
There's always something to do. Ovetime is available when needed, but there's rarely any time when you're not busy.
I had lots of my own jobs for some big customers.
Working in industry teaches you so much more than university does. I'm sure everything I've learnt will help a lot next year.
The Company
My department was quite small with only 3 other engineers and 5 technicians. Everyone got on well and helped each other out.
Right at the beginning of the placement I had to attend some lectures at Vauxhall on their operations. This was a complete waste of time as I've done no work for Vauxhall. Other than that, working at Millbrook as been very well organised.
I had a fair amount of driver training and general training on equipment from other engineers, but I didn't go on any training courses or anything like that.
Subsidised Canteen
I got offered an extension to my placement so hopefully that means they want me back when I graduate!
The Culture
There is a social scene with the Vauxhall undergrads in Luton, but I lived at home so didn't get involved.
The cost of taxis soon builds up when you're going out in Luton, Bedford or MK.
Luton and Bedford are distinctly average.
There's loads of sports clubs which you just need to look for to find.
