    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Daily tasks vary on a project basis. I am generally working on 1-2 projects at once and you can expect to take about 1 week or so to wrap up each project. I am usually driving these projects alone, albeit with some assistance from other members of the team. The core of the role is to analyse data and provide business insights - but this could mean producing dashboards on PowerBI, conducting spatial analysis on ArcGIS, pulling data through SQL, manipulating data on Excel, or coding in Python/R. The scope of the role depends very much on the current business needs as well as personal interests. I work closely with my manager who provides direction and feedback on the projects, but as mentioned above, I am also in close contact with the rest of the team and frequently consult them for advice.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Most vitally, I have been able to hone my communication skills and my ability to present the results of my analysis in a targeted manner. On top of just running the analysis, I have learnt to focus on parts of the analysis that are most actionable and can bring about the most business value. I have also been able to develop my hard skills further by using R and Python in new contexts for analysis, and picked up new programmes along the way - ArcGIS and PowerBI.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I was provided projects that I felt would make a genuine impact on the business. The results of my analysis were used to support business proposals and tenders to bring in new clients. Other internal-facing projects were also shown to stakeholders for them to better understand how the business is faring and identify areas for growth.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • There was plenty of support and guidance provided in understanding the business and getting up to speed with the way the team operates. I was scheduled in a call with everyone on the team to better understand how the team operates as a whole. At all points, I always felt that there was someone I could turn to to ask for advice, even if they didn't have the specific expertise in what I was working on. Though, there were areas especially when it came to hard skills (e.g. ArcGIS or Python) where support was thin. There is only one other person on the team who has exposure to ArcGis and Python, while the rest mostly work on SQL, Excel, and PowerBI. However, the team is very understanding in giving you more time to figure things out in such scenarios.
