Overview
The two day course was an opportunity to learn the values of Teach First and help the participants harness their own skills. It also allowed for productive collaboration and independent self-evaluation. There was an opportunity for feedback from a planned and delivered lesson. Ultimately, the course was intended to inform us about Teach First and provide feedback but also potentially start us on our Teach First journey.
Skills
The course was designed around eight key competencies of leadership. Whilst the skills of interaction, humility, motivation, planning, problem-solving, leadership, resilience and self evaluation were not new, it helped give me a better understanding of how these skills can be harnessed to be an effective educator. I do believe it helped with skills of teamwork because it created a safe environment where participants felt comfortable to interact and express their views, in a group setting.
Business Insight
It was fascinating. This is because when you think of TeachFirst you initially limit it to the teacher training side only but to hear from alumni that have moved on to broaden their horizons shows the true potential of being involved in the TeachFirst program.
Culture
They couldn’t have been easier to interact. All the team members were helpful and insightful but also passionate, despite them having taught the program (probably many times) their enthusiasm to teach was exceptional. It was also a really welcoming atmosphere, this may have been partly down to the other participants as well. However, this does show TeachFirst in a good light as it attracts the participants with many positive qualities.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed this course and would definitely recommend it to friends and fellow students.
Yes
Be yourself and speak about your own personal reasons for having shared values to TeachFirst. Being nervous about applying is natural but they are not trying to trip you up, they are there to help your personal development. Also, most of the fellow participants will be in the exact same situation and so this can create a nice environment where no sense of hierarchy is developed.
