    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes, I have gained an incredible amount of skills that have allowed me to suceed in my placement and achieve my targets. These skills include, time management skills, leadership skills, communication skills, teamwork skills, self-reliance skills, excelling in excel and confidence. Although all of these skills are important, it ensures that you gain the relevant skills that will be useful within your career once you finish your degree. Time-management and teamwork are the most important skills that I mentioned.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I wasn't really involved in a team as such during my placement, so a lot of the work relied on the data collection that I had undertaken. Often, as a placement student you work within a team so it is easier to make progress with your project as everybody helps out, but being on your own means that you only have yourself to rely on. Although it is a challenge, it is very rewarding.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a lot of support during the start of my placement, having 2 or 3 1:1 with my manager to ensure I am focussing on the right areas and allowing myself to understand as much as possible in a short amount of time. The support helped me excel in understanding specifically my role within the factory so I could achieve my goals and targets as quickly as possible. the support eased the deeper I got into my placement.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The atmosphere was very social and active, with teams within teams. In the factory there are different groups of people working on completely different things, however, people may overlap when they need help, which I found very useful. The culture of unilever is all about how the employees feel and there is a lot of support which helps as you know who to turn to when you are struggling with work of even personally, which was great.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed my placement as it allowed me to prove to myself what I can achieve in such a short amount of time. It also allowed me to progress with my skills that are required for a successful career. The placement helped me to understand where to prioritise and how to balance different projects based on their importance, however, each project must be complete. the placement gave a clear insight into Unilever as a company.

  • 7. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Unilever
  • Make sure you understand exactly what function you are applying to as it is really important because each function is very different, such as R&D compared with Marketing or Supply Chain. Also read up about the company and identify the standard that Unilever require in a placement student or employee in general. Also, just be yourself as they are a company who care more about you as a person rather than your grades, which I think it great.
