    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My job role during my placement year was to research, design and implement all user experiences whilst interacting with a digital product or service. As a design consultant my responsibilities will focus on creating irresistible experiences for users in all areas being UX, Service and Visual design working on client facing projects to solve real world problems.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt a new discipline being Service Design. Understanding the artefacts involved. I learnt a new software Figma and have created many artefacts for clients. I have learnt what it's like to be a client and applying user -centred solutions to solve clients strategic goals. Furthermore, how to interview users and the process it involves.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given an incredible amount of responsibility. I lead feature development on my most recent project from ideation to development which will soon be live in the app I am working on. I also, have led many client conversations and playbacks to the clients. Furthermore, I led many giveback opportunities such as community events and activities.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I had a lot of support during my placement. Having a foundation manager who supported me with lots of my general tasks as well as my personal development. But my task manager who delegated me tasks and ensured I was achieving my goals for my placement more specifically around my role and discipline in design. Lots of graduates supported me also and mentored me with their experience.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I was specifically in iX mostly. This part of the company had an amazing culture with a great community that organised events every month for everyone to attend that were engaging and accommodating. A very happy, healthy and positive environment to be in.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I extremely enjoyed my placement. I learnt an incredible amount of skills which have supported me with my future career. Moreover, the community was very positive and often I would love coming into the office because of the environment I was in.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to IBM
  • Take on any opportunity that arises. There is a lot to gain if you really put your foot forward. Don't be afraid to ask questions and take on feedback, fail fast and it will only ever support you.
