    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • As a software engineering intern, on a day to day basis, I operate within an agile scrum environment, attending daily standups and huddles. Throughout a sprint I take on a number of different tasks, varying from coding to design to development testing amongst a handful of others, depending on the user stories chosen.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I believe I have built on almost every skill I brought with me from university, as well as being given the opportunity to pick up new technologies and expand my technical knowledge. I have also been able to involve myself in multiple volunteering opportunities, helping me expand my communication and feedback skills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, throughout the placement I have been able to take on responsibility in both technical and non-technical settings. This has been in the form of running sprint retrospectives and various meetings on the non-technical side, and, on the technical side, being given the opportunity to lead development and take ownership of an internal tool.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Towards the start of the placement I was mostly shadowing senior engineers to get up to speed on the projects, and as time went on I was allowed to be a lot more independent. Despite the change however, at every step I have been able to reach out to colleagues and ask for clarification / support, and not once did a question fall on deaf ears.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Throughout my placement, everyone I have come across has been incredibly friendly and always willing to help. Having met so many people at different stages of their career from other placement students and apprentices to senior managers and chief engineers, regardless of who you speak to, you are always made to feel like a part of the team and that your opinion is respected.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Immensely. Throughout the year I feel like I have been consistently empowered to take on more responsibility and build on my skills within an incredibly supportive environment. Alongside the work there has also been multiple social events throughout the year which have only added to the overall enjoyment of the placement.

  • 7. Would you recommend Lockheed Martin to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Lockheed Martin
  • My main piece of advice to other people applying to Lockheed Martin would be to go in with an open mind and always ask questions. When I found out the project I was going to be working on, it was nowhere near what I had expected and I was skeptical at first, but the more involved I got and the more questions I asked, the more in my element I felt.
