Software Engineer Intern Review

My role involves developing projects that can support military training through virtual, constructive and/or live simulations. I have been involved in various projects which were built for different purposes using different platforms and programming languages. Some of them run on Desktop, while others were built for Android devices. Currently I am working on a project involving Android devices, Fitbit and an Augmented Reality Headset (HoloLens 2). Some days I also have to demonstrate my work to other colleagues, clients or managers to provide an overview of the final goal and progress made for the specific application/project.

Throughout my placement experience, I have developed and improved various skills that I believe are vital for my career. I have improved my presentation skills and confidence to talk to other people as I have been involved in various tradeshows where I showcased my work to other clients/customers and people from around the world. This gave me the opportunity to build confidence and improve my presentation skills, but also gain some valuable feedback from other people in order to perform better in the future.

I was not given too much responsibility at the beginning of my placement year as I was introduced to the team and had to complete a training course. The training course helped me understand the software and tools used by the company and their purpose. Following the training period, I was given some tasks and I had to produce design documentations and plan how I was going to undertake the task. This gave me more responsibility which helped me be more organized and improve my planning and prioritization skills.

I received a lot of support and help from the other colleagues, especially at the beginning of the placement as I was not familiar with the tools and software used by the company. My mentor provided a lot of support in my projects even after the training period. Other colleagues are quite friendly and always open to help. The guidance on my tasks was also quite good as my manager scheduled meetings with me to explain what he wanted me to do and he clarified any doubts I had.

The company's culture and atmosphere was great as everyone was welcoming and friendly. Everyone gets along quite well and respects each other. We all work hard and have some laughs together throughout the day. Everyone is always open to help whenever you need to support. Everyone respects other people's culture and point of views. We get feedback from other colleagues which helps us improve our skills and perform better. In general, it is a great atmosphere.

I truly enjoyed my placement year at Lockheed Martin as a Software Engineer Intern. I developed, improved and learnt a lot of new skills that will be quite beneficial for my career. I developed various networking connections and opportunities with fellow employees of Lockheed Martin. I went to various tradeshows, even international ones to showcase my work. This helped me improve my communication skills and talk to several customers and people from different countries and backgrounds.

My main advice to other people applying for Lockheed Martin would be to be confident, honest and uphold your integrity as an individual as there are the key values of Lockheed Martin. I would recommend that you mention all the programming languages that you know or have used in the past. Also mention all the skills you have. Be proud of yourself and respectful towards other people's values and culture. Ask questions to interviewers if you have any doubts.
