    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes. When I first joined, I was guided by the previous intern what to do, however within only months I was responsible for all of my tasks, and my managers trusted in me to get my work done without looking over my shoulder. It was a steep learning curve, but very supportive. I had a lot of responsibility, but I could always go to my managers for help or advice.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a lot of support from colleagues, managers, and executive partners, whether that be: - Supporting me in my ability to complete my work - Supporting my continuous self and professional development and learning through taking courses and having mentors - Supporting my ability to have a healthy work life balance, making sure I took all my holidays, took sick days when ill, and didn’t work past 5pm unnecessarily

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • It feels like a flat corporate hierarchy structure. I worked with very senior executive partners in my role, and never felt judged for being an intern. IBM's culture of respecting each other, encouraging everyone to be their authentic selves, and pushing diversity and inclusion has created a very safe and welcoming environment. IBM's culture is also surrounded by ensuring clients can trust us, we our outcome focused, and have a growth mindset. I would argue that IBM culture is one of the main reasons I have loved my time here and why so many people apply and stay with them for decades.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to IBM
  • Definitely apply! Be open minded in regard to what role you want to do. Be mindful as an early professional as while most (if not all) IBM UK office have interns, grads and apprentices, IBM York Road (London office in Waterloo) has the largest group of interns, grads and apprentices - meaning there’s always networking socials with other early professionals and other IBMers not in the early professional schemes. However, all offices have socials to network.
