    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Conversing with the audited entity on various matters to be able to complete sections of the financial statement delegated to you. Working both individual and as part of a team to achieve the objective of performing the audit within the given time span. Utilisation of industry specific software, Excel and Microsoft Teams is significant.

  • My Excel skills have significantly developed through my placement year, being able to now use both industry specific software add ins, such as DataSnipper, Rainbow , Audit Assistant, alongside formulas like IF statements, V-Lookup, Pivot Tables, ect. My confidence in networking and communication has expanded, as this role requires conversing with various people of a varying degree of knowledge and expertise. Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • The more I became confident in my work and capabilities from the experience I gained on prior bookings, the greater responsibility I gained as I took individual responsibility for my work and moved onto more elaborate and difficult sections. I also began to have the responsibility of conducting talks with the entity on a 1:1 basis and document the results independently. I took responsibility for being apart of the social team as well.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I gained guidance from my People Manager when I first joined the firm especially, in terms of settling in, the ways in which to complete things,. I gained guidance through the training and initial accounting and audit courses I fulfilled. The way in which the team is structured, I gained guidance from the semi-senior to help me perform my tasks and point me in the right direction.

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The atmosphere at BDO is amazing, and this is why I would like to go for a graduate role with them. Every single person in the office or I have met and worked with in a team, has always been welcoming, willing to answer all of questions, and provide the guidance and support I needed to further my skills.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed my placement thoroughly as I met so many amazing people, got the chance to work on big audits, take responsibility and ownership of my work, got involved in socials across the Midlands region, led discussions with the entity and furthered my soft skill set- from communication to organisation. Taking this placement year at BDO was the best decision I made, and have made friends for life.

  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to BDO
  • This role can be intense within busy season especially, and overtime may be required, so be prepared for this. The more you put in the more you get out. Being a team member, being willing to learn and help others, taking the time to do things right and put hard work in pays off.
