    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • The Spring Vacation scheme consisted of several structured, timetabled sessions - including practice overview sessions, networking sessions, Q&A sessions with current trainees and associates, as well as scheme socials. Alongside this, we were given a project to work on over the course of the two weeks about a fictional case - requiring us to conduct research into several aspects of commercial law. The remainder of the scheme involved shadowing my principal during his day-to-day work and providing assistance.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I learnt several new skills throughout the course of the Linklaters Spring Vacation Scheme. These skills include pitching skills, teamworking skills and other affiliated interpersonal skills. During the shadowing portion of the vacation scheme, I was able to develop my legal analysis and due diligence skills which further aided my professional development. In particular I learnt how to quickly and efficiently identify the most material terms in contracts - presenting them in a clear and succinct way.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • Throughout the Linklaters Spring Vacation scheme, I was provided with extensive exposure to the business and the potential roles available. I learnt more about the way in which Linklaters is structured across its different practice areas as well as internationally, but also received in-depth insights from the firm's current trainees and associates as to how the Training Contract is structured. I believe that I am now in a better position to make the most of a Training Contract.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was excellent - it was clear from the very first day that everyone is highly motivated by their job and wants to make an impact in the workplace. The environment is very welcoming with Diversity Equity and Inclusion initiatives introduced to us throughout the programme. Otherwise, the atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming, so it was very easy to settle in and feel comfortable in the workplace. I look forward to working with the company in the future.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I found the insight thoroughly enjoyable and felt a high degree of intellectual stimulation across each presentation session and task that I was assigned. I particularly enjoyed being amongst people who enjoy their work a lot - and that was clear from very early on. I believe the information I assimilated from the scheme has put me in a better position to be successful at the final training contract interview, which I look forward to completing soon.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Linklaters
  • I would advise everyone to put in as much effort as possible during the application phase. It is extremely important to prepare for the various phases of the application process such as the Watson Glaser test and the assessment center. Commercial awareness is extremely important and going the extra mile to do research on commercial law is always very helpful to be successful in the process. I would suggest reading the Financial times and the Economist to get deal exposure.
