    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • The program was a two-day event, comprising both talks and practical sessions. Talks included personal development, basic teaching skills, former TeachFirst program member panel, leadership, diversification, wellbeing and self-evaluation. Practical sessions were a short debate, lesson planning and 6-minute lesson delivery in small groups with feedback.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Aims for skill development were based on the TeachFirst competencies: interaction, understanding/motivation, planning/organising, resilience, problem solving, humility/respect/empathy, and self-evaluation. I definitely developed my understanding/motivation for TeachFirst, and gained more skills related to leadership and basic teaching. I did not progress much in the other competencies.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • I was given a clear explanation and information about TeachFirst and the training program they offer, both from the presentations and asking questions to facilitators informally. I think it's a great way to answer questions you may already have.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • General atmosphere was excellent. All the facilitators were very friendly and willing to pass on information and find people when it was unknown. All other participants were equally friendly and put me at ease throughout. Most participants seem already set on a teaching career, and I found the sessions catered more to those who knew they wanted to be teachers already.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I enjoyed the program overall. Nearly all of the sessions had some new information, and the practical tasks were valuable. It was a fun atmosphere where everyone was supportive. I am still uncertain about teaching in future, and this did not suddenly convince me.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Teach First
  • Research the competencies and be ready to show how you have met them. Attending this Taster session gives a fast-track to the Development Centre (skip first application form) and gives good experience for one of the activities at the Development Centre.
