Overview
The two days were full of short workshops on the different competencies. There was also the opportunity to have a group debate, learn more about the specific missions, and to plan and give a short teaching episode on a topic of our choice.
Skills
This really helped me develop my ability to self-evaluate and think about what went well/what I could do better. Taking part in the opportunity was also great for my resilience and social skills as I had to navigate around London and interact with people I had never met before.
Business Insight
Ambassadors for the program came to talk about their experiences working in schools which was great as they were able to tell us about some of the things that were more challenging or went wrong during their training. There were also plenty of people from the office side of things who were able to talk about the campaigns they help out with, or university recruitment.
Culture
The overall atmosphere was quite relaxed. Everyone in the office was open to having a chat if they weren't busy and there were opportunities during the day to take a short break before diving back in. Everyone was also quite young which I think helped in terms of everyone feeling like they had the same expectations.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the taster programme a great deal. It was fantastic to meet other students who are potentially interested in teaching, and to chat with people who are only a little ways into their career and so could give really relevant insight.
Yes
The application process is maybe a bit different to the usual, but the Teach First mission is something you are passionate about, that will come across in the application and video, and make you someone they would want to take on.
