    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I mainly dealt with section designs using FEA software to extract forces and Excel to ensure that the section of the pier stem created satisfies eurocode conditions.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I’ve learnt strut and tie modelling, as well as the design process from the ground up, as opposed to to top down of a bridge pier. I also had the chance to improve upon my autocad skills in order to make my work more efficient.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes I was designing all the piers for the whole 200+m span bridge for one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe. This amount of responsibility given to me was quite a pleasant surprise.

  • My line manager and supervisor gave me a lot of support when I had doubts with my tasks. They also provided the theory behind the “algorithmic” process in which we follow in design.

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everyone was very chill and most people look forward to coming into the office, although we were given the flexibility to work from home.

  • I enjoyed meeting people from different countries in Mott Macdonald. I also enjoyed the work we do as the project directly adds value into the Uk economy.
