    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I am responsible for onboarding interns, running inductions and being their point of contact throughout the year. When there aren't inductions I run workshops to assist in developing the interns personal development. Keeping spreadsheets up to date, ensuring info is readily available for senior managers and handle the back end logistics. I also have time to pursue my interests on a day to day basis.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have had an interest in Blockchain for 5 years and I knew IBM was developing technology in this area. In my time at IBM I have completed 2 Blockchain-related badges – Blockchain Essentials, and Blockchain Foundation Consulting. Secondly, I regularly attend events organised by the Foundation Technical Community (FTC). Being active and engaged in discussions on the FTC Slack channel has broadened my interest in IBM technologies

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was treated like a regular employee, even by senior employees. The work I completed made an impact on the day to day running of the business, it was real work. I was lucky enough to be involved in external programmes that have gained awards. I was more autonomous than I expected, I was trusted to do things, but was able to ask for help when needed.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I had 4 mentors during my placement that all supported me in different ways. I also had a task manager and a foundation manager. My foundation manager was a mental health first aider, so I knew I could go to them. I received a lot of guidance in my next career steps in applying for the IBM graduate scheme. This has helped me a lot.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • IBM was very welcoming, everyone was happy to talk. I used to find areas I was interested in and scheduled calls with someone in that area and they were always happy to do so. In the office, everyone is talkative and friendly. I have interacted with many senior people and it felt no different.

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed it, I have found that it has been more useful than university. It helped me excel in my personal development. There was also a lot of social opportunities throughout the year and I helped to organize a lot of them. This was an enjoyable way to meet people and network. I would highly recommend a placement to anyone. Both professionally and personally.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to IBM
  • Don't try too hard to impress people during the assessment center. Just be your natural self, contribute and help guide the team. Just don't go over the top, no one likes that. For the application focus on your technical curiousity and what value you can bring to IBM. Just take it easy as well, you will perform much better.
