    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Each day we take on tasks in regards to simulations, AR and Virtual Reality as well as learning the principles and policies that relate to them. We also challenge our knowledge in Object Oriented Programming using C++, Unreal Engine and Java to solve the tasks ahead. A lot of the work is quite challenging but my colleagues and manager reassure me that I shouldn't feel afraid to ask for help. Each week there will be more and more work as well as other programming languages that I will have to learn to keep up with the tasks at hand.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed my understanding in Agile Programming concepts as well as sharpening my skills in OOP. I have also broadened my understanding of how computer transfer packets from one another and the protocols that make it happen. I have also broadened my knowledge on hardware devices and how each compartment works together to make a fully functional device. I also had the privilege of using and learning about simulations and how they work. I have also learnt about how computers can communicate with each other to run a simulation on each monitor.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes I have definitely been given responsibilities. Even as an intern you are reminded that you still represent the company even out of office and our conduct. Also towards the end of my placement year I may have to teach some new interns of how to use the software that I had to use. I have been helping to make sure some of the simulation exercises run smoothly when VIPs visit our office to assess the functionalities of the interoperable simulation software.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • ALOT. As much as I want to say that I completely done the work by myself I would be lying. There have been some challenging tasks that I had to undertake but my lack of knowledge within the programming language can certainly slow down progress. However, my work colleagues are very open to help me. Even my boss, as busy as he is, was willing to help me out with things that I didn't understand.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?
  • 5/5

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • It is very friendly. All of the people I work with, including the manager, was very approachable and it didn't feel like I couldn't as for help from them. The dress code for our office isn't too strict so most of us feel free to where clothes we deem as comfortable. But most of us just opt to where more formal clothing, just as a sign of respect.

  • 5/5

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoy it a lot. Initially, I thought that the placement year would be quite boring just having an office job but the different challenges and tasks make it to where I must stay alert and ready for the next big challenge thrown my way. They have also helped me come out of my shell a bit. Whenever I have to do presentations on topics that I have to learn, they gave me good constructive criticisms on how to better present to an audience when talking about my topic.

  • 7. Would you recommend Lockheed Martin to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Lockheed Martin
  • Try your best and try to impress. If you show initiative of trying to broaden your knowledge in Computer Science out of university then you are going to impress the employers. Also, try to experiment with different programming languages. Not too many but as many as you feel necessary. Being able to switch between different programming languages shows your versatility and adaptability. You will most likely have to use programming languages that you haven't before so keep your knowledge up whilst you are working.
