    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The first two weeks consist of training to give us the required knowledge for the internship. This is followed by an individual project which includes a presentation and client work. Client work can range from calculations to drafting/editing letters and documents. Another project is given during the second half of the internship which also includes a presentation.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I've learnt how to use MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint in greater depth and had the opportunity to use LCP's in house software (on many occasions since they use it in a lot of their work). Also, I know more about pensions than before the internship. I've developed many skills such as time management, presenting, communication and other such skills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I was given responsibility by being able to do a lot of client work. Moreover, I was tasked with arranging a team lunch. Since LCP provided laptops for the interns, we had to take care of them so this is also another responsibility. I did not feel that my participation in work was insignificant or unappreciated.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a lot of support and guidance throughout my internship. LCP has a buddy system where everyone is assigned buddy; a person in a role above them. In my case, my buddy was in a graduate role. Our buddies are our first means of support and they guide us through the internship. However, all the other staff are just as helpful and welcoming. You can ask for help from anyone!

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everyone was really welcoming and the atmosphere in the office was not stifling at all. There's a friendly atmosphere where everyone is up for a nice chat and they all got their work done at the same time. I did not feel any pressure at all! Moreover, since everyone is very sociable and friendly, socials are common.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I very much enjoyed the internship and would recommend it to anyone who wants to be an actuary or to just try something new! For the very first time in my life, I actually enjoyed working and would look forward to coming in everyday. Moreover, the location is very convenient and easily accessible due to public transport.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Lane Clark & Peacock
  • Try to talk to as many people as possible. They're all friendly and it's good to have people you can rely on and learn from. People work on different clients and projects so it's a good learning opportunity. It's good to note that you shouldn't compete with the other interns - there's no need to! LCP's culture is based on team work and support so just enjoy yourself.
