    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role involves interpreting client briefs and then generating scheme proposals via mark-ups using software such as Bluebeam Revu. After a scheme has been chosen, it is my responsibility to develop the scheme by carrying out detailed structural analysis and design via computational methods - often all the way through to the construction phase. Typically, half of my day is spent on project work while the other half is spent on other activities such as Learning and Development, and Group Management sessions i.e. design meetings.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • - Learnt how to use new software packages: Tekla Structural Designer, Tekla Tedds, Rhino, Grasshopper3D, etc; - Improved my ability to use some software packages: Bluebeam Revu, MS Excel; - Advanced my team-working ability through highly collaborative exercises and tasks; - Developed effective communication skills when sharing ideas with my team.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes - after completing basic training, I was placed on a current project doing basic scheme work, straight away, to give me immediate exposure to the industry and to take on some level of responsibility. Each week I am becoming increasingly involved in project work, taking on further responsibilities. Experience is very valuable in this line of work; Buro Happold acknowledges this and acts on it.
