    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Completing a range of work for both the actuarial consulting sector and the Investment consulting sector. This involves actual client work that is checked by a supervisor before being finalised. There is opportunities to get involved in a range of projects also and have a meaningful impact on client work. Learning is continuous throughout the internship.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Having taken a range of training courses in the first week of the internship, there is the opportunity to learn a lot. Similarly during the programme there is countless opportunities to learn from both mentors and supervisors both about the career field and more technical knowledge. There is also opportunities to develop on interpersonal skills for example through presentations. Also, the continued use of Microsoft Excel allows for development in this skill.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • There is a high amount of responsibility given to interns and this includes being involved on actual client work with meaningful tasks. Similarly there is a strong level of autonomy placed on interns, having to pick and choose the client work they have scope to get involved with.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Large amounts of support and guidance with a mentor for both the Investment consulting and Actuarial consulting sector. There is also then a supervisor that evaluates performance. All of the team are very approachable with individuals of all levels being helpful in advising or training individuals

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture is very welcoming and collaborative with a relatively flat hierarchical structure meaning there is the opportunity to even end up sitting next to a partner. There is also many social and company events that even interns are encouraged to get involved in. There are also sports events and after work sports socials organised.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed the experience a lot, having learnt a lot but also been surrounded by a great, sociable and knowledgeable team. The work was challenging yet there was a lot to learn from it and I feel though this has helped develop many of my skills. I would definitely go back.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Barnett Waddingham LLP
  • The application process is an intense one with the assessment centre in particular being very busy. The best thing is to try your hardest but to also be your true self in the interview. Also, an important part of the assessment centre and interview is to be both inquisitive and to clearly state the reasonings behind your conclusions or workings out since they are interested in your thought processes not necessarily a right answer.
