    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • The internship was a fantastic opportunity to engage with DLA Piper's people and workstreams. Day-to-day, I attended insight sessions to learn more about the firm, networked with peers, and completed work for different practice areas. Each week, I was set objectives by my supervisor. The supervisor then reviewed these objectives with me at the end of the week, and provided invaluable feedback. Everyone within the firm was keen to make this a great experience.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • This internship has been instrumental in developing my skills as an aspiring commercial lawyer. I have been given real work to complete, which has given me a deeper understanding of the role of a trainee solicitor. I have developed public speaking skills, having taken part in a litigation simulation exercise and a group presentation project. I have developed networking skills due to DLA Piper's efforts to put on social events.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • I was given a comprehensive overview of DLA Piper during the scheme. During the induction week, I attended many presentations explaining who DLA Piper is as a firm, and their visions. These presentations included information on the firm's practice areas and sectors. I have spoken to many employees about the different roles available at DLA Piper and the routes to progression. I have been made aware of the many opportunities on offer.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • DLA Piper's core values are: be bold, be supportive, be collaborative, and be exceptional. These values are well demonstrated in the company culture, and are very prominent within day-to-day life at the firm (they are even on the desktops). Even very senior people within DLA Piper showed a real engagement with the interns and made us and our work feel valued. We were encouraged to ask questions to learn as much as possible.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I greatly enjoyed the programme and I would recommend it to any aspiring commercial lawyer. I could tell that an immense amount of effort had gone into structuring the three weeks in a way that would be of most value to the interns. I enjoyed the insight because it allowed me to gain insights into all aspects of the firm. This included the work itself, pro bono work, and extra curricular and social activities.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper
  • DLA Piper are very much interested in individuals, and value differences of opinion and people from a variety of background. I would therefore encourage future applicants to be themselves and show a willingness to learn from, and engage with, the firm. DLA Piper are looking for people of ability, but they are not looking for 'the finished product.' What is more important is your passion for the firm and the role you are applying to.
