    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • During the induction week in London, we had talks from various partners in different practice groups, Pro Bono, and D&I heads. We also participated in workshops, for example a litigation workshop. There were often social events in the evenings. The next two weeks involved sitting in different practice areas in your chosen office- you get to meet everyone in the department and undergo tasks, like due diligence, drafting, and sitting in on client calls.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The workshops in London were really insightful- I learnt some invaluable techniques regarding what makes an effective presentation, and how to network well, which become useful when you move to your chosen office. The tasks given to you during your seats definitely aid the development of new skills- you are given a taster of what trainee work is like, and quickly pick up on jargon and common practices or issues that arise.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • A lot of information was given to us regarding the structure and workings of the firm, and the different sectors within which roles are available. The sessions were really eye opening- you got a feel for the firm, its strategies, and its people, that you could not have picked up on through simply reading the website.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everyone was really down to earth- especially the partners. The feel of the firm is that they genuinely want everyone to do well, and tried to eliminate any competitive elements from the internship. The firm has an extensive Pro Bono practice and really cares about pushing for Diversity and Inclusion, as well as being environmentally aware.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper
  • Be authentic- they don't want a set of the same person. Research the firm thoroughly e.g. their values, centralised system, global reach, ESG policies, D&I policies- it is a combination of their legal excellence and values which make them a unique firm.
