Overview
The Business of Law week consisted of a carefully curated schedule which developed my soft skills. For example, business simulations, pitching ideas to clients, creating innovative business advice for sustainability. Also, there was the opportunity to interact with numerous different people within and outside of the firm, including partners, clients, fellow participants, and trainees. There was the opportunity to ask questions and receive invaluable advice from people who have been on their own journeys.
Skills
I have definitely developed my public speaking skills throughout this week. Not only was there a whole session about presenting with presence, but numerous different speakers throughout the week gave their advice on overcoming public speaking fears. On top of this, at the end of the week, we had the opportunity to pitch our ideas in the innovation den, which pushed me out of my comfort zone into presenting in front of my peers.
Business Insight
The business of law week provided a great insight into the culture of CMS, without actually being in the office. The tasks throughout the week increased my understanding of the firm, and highlighted how many different roles there were within the firm outside of the fee earners.
Culture
Everyone was so lovely, welcoming, encouraging, and relatable. I did not feel judged once. Although imposter syndrome is a given for me in these situations, I found myself feeling less imposter syndrome as the week went on, and that is a direct reflection of the interactions I had with fellow participants, as well as every speaker who volunteered for the Business of Law week.
Your Impressions
I finished everyday looking forward to the next - I think that says it all!
Yes
Just be your complete self. I have heard that a lot before, and with other firms being yourself may not help. However, CMS push people to be their individual selves, and see the value in people being able to be who they are at work - it is extremely liberating.
