    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • The business in law week involved a welcome from the managing partner and meeting office partners on day one, before undertaking a group business simulation on day two. Day three involved presentation workshops and individually presenting a pre-prepared responsible business challenge. Day 4 allowed participants to orchestrate an hour long dialogue session with clients, before day 5 involved a group presentation of a pre-prepared innovation challenge. Insights include learning more about the firm, their clients and skills/lessons to take forward in my working life.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my confidence and presentation skills through supportive and active workshops. My adaptability has also improved through surprise events and drop ins during our group simulation which we had to respond to. In this regard, teamwork has been essential throughout and invaluable. I have learnt about wellbeing techniques with a renowned guest speaker, before finally improving my professionalism when engaging for the first time in dialogue with clients and senior partners at the firm

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • It was very helpful to learn about the different practice areas within the firm that one could work in, by engaging with their clients and learning from key law firm partners in each area. It was also great that the firm facilitated discussions with those at all levels of the organisation and how each felt supported to achieve their ambitions. The business insight gained was incredible and really reaffirmed to me how amazing the firm would be to work for.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • It was very supportive throughout, with social events before and at the end of each day e.g., yoga and coffee and cake networking. The firm's social responsibility agenda dominated two activities, with a charity partner speaking to us about their relationships with CMS whilst we presented ideas on how to further their initiatives. Diversity was at the forefront of the agenda on the very first day and emphasised throughout. The firm really cared about us having breaks and were interested in our free time activities.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I really enjoyed the insight as I learnt so much during the week and met some fantastic people. The days were well structured and the days jam packed with quality content to keep us engaged and make the most of the opportunity. The team, guest speakers and all the participants valued one another and created a really engaging, enjoyable experience. If I could do it again, I would! It definitely lived up to all I was expecting.

  • 7. Would you recommend CMS to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CMS
  • The firm really wants to know about you so play on your strengths and interests outside of your studies. Make sure you are really commercially aware because the firm prides itself on really understanding the clients they serve. Everyone was really friendly during assessment centres and interviews, but be prepared for quick changes in tasks or surprise events you need to respond to. If you are thinking of applying, go for it, because even if you're not successful, you'll be supported and learn so much along the way.
