    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Throughout this year, I have gained both soft and hard skills simultaneously. Regarding soft skills, I have worked closely with my team to ensure that tasks are carried out. We communicate these daily on our team stand-ups using Trello. In some cases, there are high priorty, urgent tasks and I have learnt the importance of time management, especially over the last few months. By having a supportive team around me has enabled me to become successful in my role.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Throughout my 12 month placement year, I have demonstrated a high level of collaboration within my team. I work closely with my task manager, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions], to get the work completed and some of these tasks come through very quickly and are urgent. Due to this, I have learnt the importance of time management and the ability to communicate effectively within my team. I work well with [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions], and ask for his amazing support to help me produce banners and sometimes video editing. Whenever team members are absent, I happily stand in and complete the word needed for them, such as sending out the NPS communication. I always offer my support within the team and understand that by helping each other, we are a strong team!

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • During my placement year, I was offered continuous support from my managers; both foundation and task as well as the colleagues around me. I always felt as though I could ask for help and people were willing to point me in the right direction. I also received lots of support from my university during my placement year especially my visiting manager. I would definitely recommend IBM because their support is fantastic and they are willing to give their time to help.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was fantastic. The people were great and supportive when you were either working from home or when you were in the office. They have a sense of inclusivity for young colleagues. They host events such as Summer Socials to entice people back into the office, which encourages people to network and meet new people. The atmosphere was incredible especially in the office. I would definitely, 100%. recommend the company culture and atmosphere!

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to IBM
  • The advice that I would give to people applying to IBM would be not to worry about whether you are technically capable. Of course this helps, but they are a company who invest in a lot of time and resources to help you gain these skills. Also, due to the nature of the company being so large there are many jobs which don’t require you to be technical. It’s about your willingness to learn and how curious you are.
