    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Everyday is not the same in audit with RSM. There are a variety of tasks and responsibilities. I assist the audit team with different companies and carry out testing of account balances with supervision of senior colleagues. I interact with the team frequently and can ask for guidance when required. I am allocated to different jobs frequently, which may involve travelling to the client or working from the office. There is often times where client interaction is required.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have definitely improved my IT skills, especially in Excel. I have learnt how to use valuable Excel formulas such as using VLOOKUP and Pivot Tables. This has improved my efficiency when performing testing on account balances. Following on, I have improved my interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with clients and attending team events. Time management has also been a key factor when working towards deadlines and ensuring tasks are completed to the highest standard.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • At the beginning of my placement I was allocated tasks with not much responsibility. However, as I became more experienced in certain tasks and through time, I noticed I was given higher responsibility. I am now allocated whole sections of the audit file, where it is my responsibility to ensure they are completed to certain deadlines and to a high standard. This has improved my organisation skills significantly and my ability to meet deadlines efficiently.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a significant amount of guidance and support during my placement. There are frequently scheduled training sessions which involves all RSM offices across the UK, which was mostly audit training. Following on, I was assigned a buddy who was very friendly and was my first call for assistance if I had any issues. My line manager was also very friendly and would ensure that everything was set up correctly during the first few weeks.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everyone in the RSM office was friendly and easy to get along with. Everyone is always willing to help and give guidance if you have any issues. There were frequent social events and activities to get everyone involved and improve teamwork. There was a football club created for people interested and entered our local league. Events include sports day which involves RSM offices in a specific region which allows you to network and make connections.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement with RSM. The company culture is positive and everyone is very friendly. The team makes sure that you are getting on well and will always lend a helping hand if you have any issues or difficulty understanding. The work is varied, which is something that I enjoyed as you are not always doing the same task. It definitely met my expectations and was a very good first experience in the finance industry.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to RSM
  • I would advise that others applying to RSM should be positive and have an open mind. Don't be afraid to ask any questions if you are finding a certain task difficult as everyone is friendly and always willing to help. Ensure you are prepared for the interview process and assessment centre to make sure you can show the best version of yourself! What inspired me to join was the inclusive work culture and positive view on CSR.
