    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role includes supporting brands to implement QR codes across product packaging, POS stands, and TV advertisements to create a seamless consumer journey from pack AW/adverts to the brand's online offering. On a day-to-day basis, I generate QR codes, work with our external design agency to create 'pretty' QR codes that will match a brand's aesthetic, develop landing pages, and then analyse the consumer data we gather from said experiences.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Coming from a non-tech background, I have quickly learnt new skills such as data analytics (including interpreting GA data & implementing Power BI dashboards), as well as honing my professionalism and business acumen when conversing with multiple parties- whether than be internal or external teams around the globe.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Quickly into my placement year, I was promoted to 'Global Connected Packaging Programme Support'- aka, supporting the programme manager in their day-to-day work. This saw me being solely responsible for a lot of brand contact & analytical work, and so training was absolutely on-the-job (although support was available if needed). As the year went on my responsibilities have expanded- to the point where I led the team when my manager was out of the office.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • When joining, I had a Line Manager who led the team & was my go-to contact for all things Unilever. I also had a Contact Manager, who was there to support me if I had any team-specific grievances that I felt I couldn't take to my line manager. Manpower (who I was contracted under) responds to any queries quickly and is always there with pay/holiday/bonus support.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Absolutely fantastic- there is so much room for upskilling and learning new things, which is encouraged! You have the opportunity to get involved with purpose-driven work e.g., I worked on Dove's Reverse Selfie TV project, which was amazing! The teams love what they do, and that is reflected in the general attitude to work. I would definitely come back to work here in the future- plus, you can receive a bonus!

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I loved it so much! And not in a generic ', I'm promoting the company' way. I've been involved in so much amazing work this year, and it has completely redefined what I want to do in the future- I now know what work excites me & what I want to wake up and do every day! I would definitely recommend this placement, especially if you are unsure of what you want to do.

  • 7. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Unilever
  • Be yourself! There are no grade requirements when applying, so make sure your values fit with Unilever's. At any point in the application stage, recruiters are seeing what you would be like to work with, how purpose-driven you are, how you can contribute to the company, and whether you could be the next Alan Jope! So be pioneering, show teamwork in your assessment centre, have integrity and passion, and KNOW what Unilever does.
