    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role involves managing the deployment of various workshops and programmes for our employees, developing new and more efficient methods for learning and leading on the launch of new programmes and creating project plans to ensure we are able to meet our deadlines. I attend meetings on a weekly basis to provide updates on projects, and have some creative freedom to really work on making a positive impact. I have had the opportunity to work on projects ranging from learning to diversity and inclusion within the business, to improve the quality of learning employees receive and make sure the diversity we present through our brands is reflected through our employees too.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have definitely developed strong presentation skills, as within my role, I had to make proposals to more senior employees, meaning I was often designing presentations and presenting them to various individuals across the business which was initially difficult to me as I had not previously had a lot of experience in it. My ability to form relationships and not being afraid to ask questions is probably the biggest skill I have received from my placement.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given more responsibility than I expected, and this encouraged me to provide the best quality work I could, and also be very open and receptive to feedback from my manager or other stakeholders. I led on two projects independently, and I was the subject matter expert or the point of contact for both of these projects.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • My manager was incredibly helpful and supportive. She was very hands-on, meaning I always felt I could ask her questions if I was confused or uncertain about anything. Also, the teams I worked with, especially when I started were patient with me, when I asked for something to be repeated, for example. A lot of support on projects and tasks, and people were so open to discussing their career journey with me, and giving me tips as someone who is just starting out in their career.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I haven't had a very negative experience with anyone in the business. Overall, people I came across were polite and friendly. I would definitely say for someone who is more reserved, it takes a bit of adjusting to adapt to the culture, as it varies slightly based on the function you work in.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I definitely enjoyed it, and met some great people who I plan to keep in contact with after I leave, and I would definitely consider coming back as a graduate.

  • 7. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Unilever
  • The application process is quite simple: an application which would ask the typical 'why Unilever' type of questions, then a video interview (recorded) and finally an assessment centre. They do take some time to get back to you after the video interview as there are so many applicants but don't let that dishearten you. The assessment centre was different to others that I attended- a nice blend of individual and collaborate activities. In preparation for the interview and assessment centre, I highly recommended researching Unilever's values and thinking of examples in your life of when you've displayed that attribute to show your values align. Be as well-rounded as you can be- talk about that side hustle you're working on, or any extracurriculars you partake in.
