    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I check my emails and deal with any immediate queries. Once I have checked emails I will structure my day and write a to do list. I will focus on candidate generation, getting job ads out, checking applications and posting on social media. I will then aim to place candidates in the jobs I have available. I will call clients to sell in candidates or to offer my support in their recruitment.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Confidence. This is the biggest thing I have gained from recruitment. Stress management. Your workload will be intense and performance is very much a numbers game. Communication skills. You have to learn how to treat each person as an individual with this and it really enhances your communication abilities. Team work. You must work together and communicate efficiently to earn everyone money. Recruitment knowledge. You will learn the ins and outs of recruitment.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was immediately given responsibility for 40 people on a vital vaccination project. I had to deal with shift bookings, cancellations and queries. You are thrown into the deep end and it is a very broadening experience. I had to deal with final interview stages at a large car manufacturers. I had big decisions to make within months of being in the company, with peoples livelihoods at stake.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The support was very good. The office was very welcoming and my manager knew when to push me further and when to give me support when I was struggling. The company offer many schemes which offer mental health support, financial support and internal dispute support. The office is filled with intelligent individuals, whom are able to give you great advice at a moments notice. It is a helpful and supportive environment.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The atmosphere was a very helpful and supportive one. As it is a customer facing environment, most people were quite bubbly and outgoing. There was a work hard culture, yet fun was allowed also. As long as you get your job done and your numbers are good, you will be accepted and be unhindered by management mostly.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • The work I have done, was not what I was originally sold into. However, I have been given the opportunity to move onto different things. The team here are great and I have felt very welcome during my time here. The company rewards for doing well and supports you. I would definitely go back to the company and am hoping to work part time with them whilst on my final year of university.

  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Hays
  • The interview process is strenuous. Prepare heavily, do some mock role plays and listen to some recruitment calls on Youtube as they helped me massively. Be inquisitive! I was inspired to help people in their lives, I've had candidates cry (tears of joy!) over the phone because they are so happy with the service we have provided. It is a great feeling, one which I aimed for before joining.
