    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The role depends on what area of the business you are rotating in. Overall, in each team, all interns will have a final project that they are working on, and must present this to their team and line manager. There are also social events, day to day tasks to help your team, commercial awareness, networking and team meetings, etc. Day to day activity (depending on your team) could involve: analysis of work, building models, getting involved in various deals in DCM, BCF, or conversations/shadowing in Sales and Trading.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I most definitely have both learnt and developed, on new and existing skills. These skills include both soft skills as well as technical skills. For example, skills such as: analysis skills, problem solving skills, communication, team work, presentation skills, confidence, listening skills, adaptation. I have done so through doing the desk work itself that was provided to me, the individual project worked on, as well as in general meetings and social events, where I communicate with different teams and interns.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • This differs depending on which team you're with. For example, if you are on the trading floor, you may not have as much responsibility compared to another team, as you can't actually trade the products at hand. Overall, I think I was given the correct amount of responsibility during my internship. I was given plenty of desk work, an individual project to work on, and I was kept engaged and intellectually stimulated throughout. This was amazing for my learning and development, and I enjoyed it so much.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a good amount of support and guidance during my summer internship with Santander. I first began with mandatory training provided by the company. As I joined my first team, I also had a supportive rotation manager and colleagues (associates, analysts, etc) who were more than willing to provide me additional training, support, and guidance. My line manager was also highly supportive, by providing regular feedback and meetings. I felt extremely valued by the company and it was a fantastic experience.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Santander's company culture and general atmosphere is amazing and unmatched. They are extremely supportive of your ambitions, development, and overall happiness. From Analysts, to Associates, to Rotation Managers, to my Line Manager - each and every person I came across was always more than willing to sit down and spend time with you. Even after my summer internship was over, they were all more than willing to help me and be supportive in my career - answering my emails and keeping in touch with me. I love the atmosphere of the company so much and I truly felt like a valued member of the team whilst I was there!

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed my summer internship to a huge extent. It was one of the best experiences that I have ever had and I am so happy that I was able to experience my business area of interest at Santander. I completed an internship in business areas of interest, had supportive colleagues, the programme was very organised, amazing for my development and networking, and it was very open minded (as I could complete two rotations) which is highly useful for us students who are trying to figure out which career is most suited to us.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Santander
  • The advice that I would give to other students who are looking to apply to Santander is that you should be open minded, proactive, a hard worker, and always looking to take on new challenges. You must also be someone who is actively looking to develop themselves both personally and professionally. Santander is an amazing place to work at, so there will always be opportunities to learn and enjoy whatever it is that you are doing.
