  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was assisting a senior engineer on a live project in concept design phase. This involved carrying out structural analysis on multiple design options and forming a basis of comparison of the options.

  • Yes. I have developed my structural analysis skills using finite element methods. I have also learnt about live projects and design processes.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I was given a lot of responsibility. The work I was doing was forming the basis of structural reports being sent to the architect and client that were then used to inform design decisions.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I had a line manager who was incredibly supportive. We had regular calls about the project to answer any questions I had and to set me new tasks. We also had a scheduled call once a week to discuss my progress with the professional development goals that were set at the beginning of the placement. I was also able to reach out to any member of the team if I had questions or was struggling.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture was really good, the office had a very friendly and social atmosphere with new people often coming up to say hello and introduce themselves. The team it's self also had a great atmosphere, with everyone going for lunch and coffee together when we were in the office.

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I absolutely loved my placement. I found the work really interesting and useful, learning loads of skills and gaining knowledge to use in my next year at uni. I also really enjoyed the company and the general ethos of the people and team.
