    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Working with senior and graduate engineers on exciting projects both locally and abroad! I was able to work on these projects with knowledge I had gained from university whilst also learn a lot of new things. This involved communicating with engineers on a day-to-day basis, performing written calculations and using different types of software's.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I learnt a lot from my placement which goes further and beyond what I already knew. I learnt how to structure calculation reports for conceptual designs of projects and improve upon my writing skills. I was able to improve upon my technical skills through in depth uses of software I am already used to. I was able to see how a project comes together from all aspects on a software and how everything is inter-related.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Most definitely. I was given a set design role on a project and to provide high level structural calculations to which members of my team would check over. This information I was tasked with providing would then be able to feed into the other aspects of the project that other senior engineers were working on. I felt very thankful and proud to be given this responsibility.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I was very fortunate to be able to receive high level help from my work colleagues. Even with the Covid-19 pandemic, my team went above and beyond to make sure I knew what I was doing and that I felt welcome. I had any work I was doing checked over and I was always asked if I needed anything at all!

During my placement there were a lot of out-of-office activities which were on and this encouraged me to take part and get involved.
