    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role is within data analytics but I mostly work in the development team building internal tools using C# and ASP.NET. I have gained experience in many areas of analytics including SQL and Power BI. We work in 2 weeks sprints so I am constantly working on new projects and getting to explore different areas I am interested in. I have daily stand-up calls every morning with my team as well as manager catch-ups.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Since joining I have learnt many new technical skills which I did not know before. Our main languages of C# and SQL were new to me and I have also gained knowledge of new tools such as Power BI, SSIS and Blazor. As interns we also complete monthly training sessions to develop our personal and professional soft skills. We are also given subscriptions to online learning sites which lets us learn when we have time.

  • How would you rate the training provided during your experience?

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • The amount of responsibility increases throughout the placement with the first couple of months mostly being focused on learning. Within a few months I was being given similar tasks and responsibility to other team members but with support from them when needed. I got the chance to be responsible for important projects and tasks during my placement which had a big impact and I actually ended up supporting other team members as well at times.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was
  • 4/5

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • During my placement I recieved lots of support and I always felt as if there was someone who could help if I needed it. I had daily morning calls with my team to talk about what I was working on as well as regular 1 to 1 catch ups with my manager. Also, whenever I would reach out to someone on Microsoft Teams for support I would usually get a very fast and helpful response.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?
  • 5/5

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture felt very friendly and welcoming. In particular a lot of focus is put on early careers and even virtually there were lots of opportunities to socialise and connect with other interns, graduates and apprentices. There were lots of team, department and company-wide events during my year here which generally good but perhaps not as good as they would've been in person. If the placement had some in person aspects I believe it would've been better but this was understandable due to the situation.

  • How would you rate the inclusiveness of the culture?

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Overall the placement was very enjoyable. The tasks I was given were varied and tailored to the areas I was interested in. There was also a lot of opportunities to develop and learn with everyone keen to help me push myself. During my year there were many chances to connect with new people and see other areas of the company which I believe will help me decide what I want to in my future career.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Virgin Media O2
  • When applying for Virgin Media I believe it is important show your interest for the telecommunications industry as well as your connection with the company's values. The application process focused more on personal experiences and ability to learn as opossed to testing technical skills. Knowledge of the company and the industry generally will also help a lot. It is also important to express the areas you're interested in during your application as this may decide your role.
