    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The finance intern scheme gives exposure to various areas of the business within a commercial finance role. On a day to day basis I not only interact with my immediate and wider team, however also various senior business partners and stakeholders across the business. Responsibilities include producing financial reports and analysis of data which can relate to day to day business enquiries or larger budgets and forecasts. Also providing commentary on business performance from a financial perspective. I have had the opportunity to lead my own projects too, as well as taking part in the extra development sessions that the company provides for the intern cohort to help improve skills such as presentation, excel, networking etc.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have really grown in my confidence since starting the intern role. The company also really helps to develop transferable skills that will help within your future career. This includes sessions on presentation skills, networking, excel workshops, team-work, self-awareness etc. My time-management and prioritisation skills have developed largely since starting the role, as you often have multiple responsibilities and tasks at a time. Furthermore, I have learnt a lot about excel which I use everyday within my role.

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I have experienced responsibility on various projects throughout my time so far. The level of responsibility grows over time as your knowledge, experience and confidence builds within the company. I feel I am always supported by my team when given responsibility too and ensure I always ask questions when unsure to build my knowledge.

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture is great and has a fun atmosphere reflected through the offices design. Virgin Media O2 are very supportive of employees with great perks and benefits. Office attire is 'smart-casual' and they are big on bringing your 'authentic self to work'. They encourage involvement with different networks throughout the company too such as the 'All in' network which focuses on inclusion- divisions such as the women's network, proudly, and enrich.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Virgin Media O2. There are lots of opportunities to get stuck in with and I would definitely recommend involving yourself wherever you can and gain exposure and network outside of your role- whether this be volunteering or attending after work events- its definitely good fun! Within finance particularly you can find there are often much busier periods of the month and much quieter periods where outside opportunities really help to keep you busy.
