    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was a whole new experience for everyone as it was all virtual, due to the COVID restrictions. But it was a really insightful and enjoyable experience- we all learnt so much about CCB and Santander. There was multiple opportunities to speak to senior staff members and gain valuable insight, allowing us to ask any questions or queries we had. The internship definitely gave me a holistic view of what it would be like to work at Santander, and the requirements of the role.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • As it was virtual, there was naturally limited contact with other colleagues. However, the times we did spend together was very enjoyable- we did many virtual ice-breakers to get to know each other .

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • To a very high extent- all of us were individually assigned a senior member of staff who we had regular meetings with throughout the week. In these meetings we had the ability to ask any questions we had, and learn more about the role. This was the most beneficial aspect of the whole week, as it enabled us to gain an insight from the most senior members at Santander. It was very easy to communicate with them, as they were very welcoming and kind

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Considering it was a virtual internship, we all were relatively busy. As part of the internship we had to compile multiple presentations, which did take a fair bit of planning. The rest of the events were moreso situated around being able to talk to current graduates/apprentices to gain an insight into working for Santander. There were also various interactive sessions throughout the week, hence it was a busy internship for us in light ot it being virtual.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The nature of the work wasn't really geared towards responsibility, as it was all virtual and shortened in duration due to the virus. However, for the tasks we were asked to complete, we were given full autonomy and allowed to complete in the way we ourselves personally desired. This did give a sense of responsibility, as we had the freedom to make our own choices and decisions regarding how we would approach the various tasks.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • We learnt how to present ourselves virtually on camera to other people. This was by far the most valuable skill I learnt, as in this current context we are seeing a transition towards remote working- thus being able to confidently communicate to others in this setting is highly valuable. Also my degree studies are also virtual and we have various virtual presentations in our modules- so this internship has given me an advantage in that respect

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was virtual- so all work was conducted from home.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised, especially considering this is the first time Santander hosted a virtual internship. It was evident that a lot of planning and consideration had gone into this internship, as initially I was wondering how feasible a virtual internship would actually be. It was infant highly organised- we had very clear schedules and there were no scheduling or logistical errors throughout the internship. The talks from the various graduates were asking very well structured along with our meetings with the mentors

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We was tasked with delivering two presentations to our mentor's. The first was a chance to allow us to get to grips with virtual presenting, additional to receiving feedback from our mentor's on our presenting style. The second took place a day after this, and was being assesses by the mentor's in regards to being made a full time offer. This very clearly shows how the firm invests in you, as you are given a chance to have a trial run prevention that is not even assessed a day prior the actual one. The feedback too also helped immensely in personal development

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The prospects are very promising. This is a firm which places a much stronger emphasis on the individual person- you are given the chance to rotate amongst various departments before deciding where your strengths align. The firm actively helps in sharing your professional growth, and from the internship I got the impression they really look to invest in their graduates to become potential leaders one day. The talks from the employees who went through the graduate scheme also confirm this

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • It was all virtual, and took place when covid restrictions were in place so naturally there was not much we could do. That being said, it was very easy to interact with the other students and graduates who had been through the process. In light of the circumstances, this internship did a very good job in allowing us to network with other people and maintain social contact. Everyone was very open and welcoming in addition to this too.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Again, all virtual so there was no costs of living involved.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Not possible due to restrictions in place.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Again, very limited as the restrictions made it impossible to offer anything inperson outside work. However, through the various talks with the current heads there are an abundance of opportunities to be able to participate in social/fundraising events within the firm.
