    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • A very friendly work environment. Everyone involved made sure the internship was high in quality and insightful, despite the challenges with COVID. There were many conferences held by many throughout the company and each was varied in role and interesting. I learned a lot from this internship from not only a technical background but also a financial one, with in depth training, lead by industry specialist. I would recommend this course to anyone that asked.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone I spoke to was very positive about the interns. They all felt we were the future of the company, and it felt like it. Many people in the company came through a similar system so they understood were we were coming from. Any idea was meet with positivity and a keenness to help our improve. Though I feel we could have taken on more responsibility during the internship, but the length of the internship made that a bit harder.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was highly supportive and gave me an in-depth look at how my role could fit in the company. He demonstrated his projects and showed the whole process. This was fascinating as I saw the development process from inception, to prototyping, to component development and then publishing. Any questions I had about projects were always answered and I was always pushed to look deeper. I felt this helped me get the most from the internship.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • As the internship was all hosted online there were times between conference calls or project meetings. But in this time we were encouraged to work on self development courses and network as much as possible. The conference calls were not very intense but highly interesting. The company makes it clear they don't wish people to work outside of hours and as such are reasonable about work loads. I felt that is I wanted to push myself I could.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Given the internship was all online there was not as much integration into the company as I would have hoped. While we were given managers and they took us through their day to day processes, we were not working on any current system. Instead we had projects separate from the company. I can understand the need for this however due to security risks being higher when virtual. Overall, we could have had more to do with working teams.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I felt the technical training was a bit rushed and lacking in content. Though I can understand everyone needs to be caught up. However, we only had 3 days of technical training. It was nice to see industry standards for specific things. The financial training was brilliant but again could have done with more time. Overall the trading was okay considering the length of the internship, but by making the internship at least a week longer would have improved the quality massively.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everything was online but all the calls were very inclusive with questions being encouraged. Post people got involved which was great an lead to a wide variety of experiences and knowledge blending together to create some fascinating experiences. I really looked forward to hopping on calls to see what would be discussed next or what invitation my team would come up with next. On my team we were very good at being able to pair off and quickly communicate when coming back together.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The organisation was brilliant, everyone involved in that side of the internship did a perfect job. I was unsure how this side of the internship would go due to the immense organisation required due to the virtual nature of the internship. However I was pleasantly surprised by the clarity of the process and timeliness of responses from any questions I may have had. Overall, everyone involved should be proud of what they achieved this year!

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Given the length of the internship it was very difficult to have specialised training for each individual. However working with my manager to discover the systems used and insights into how the company develops a product was very useful. I would have liked to participated in more complex technical training, but I'm sure that is to come in the next stages. From the financial training I feel much more confident in that side of the business.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • It seems there is a clear progression structure in the company and after to chatting with people at all levels of the company I can see a clear path for me to get to the next levels in the business. I am also clear on the roles and expectations for every level. I have been shown many was of achieving more and progressing internally, and it seems like this is heavily encouraged by the company.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • It was difficult to socialize with other interns with everyone at home. However, we had many specials for 'speed networking' were we had 15 minutes to chat with interns from different sectors and even had a session linking US and UK interns. Everyone was great to chat to especially due to the global spread of the interns. It was cheery to chat and network with people with great weather while it was raining in England.
