About You
I thoroughly enjoyed the taster experience since it provided useful insight into different teaching methods and the extent to which disadvantaged students suffer under the education system.
Teach first regularly provided every member of the taster experience with support and kept in contact with all members through regular follow up emails and by creating a facebook group.
We were provided with all resources in advance to the programme. We were also provided with copies of the slides and presentations used during the experience. There was also a welcome event which helped us become more familiar with zoom for the insight event.
The skills and knowledge gained are not relevant to my degree. However, they will be greatly invaluable for a future career in teaching and can also be useful in other industries.
The Company
The taster experience was very well structured and timed. A timetable was sent to all member and the timing for each event was immaculate and strictly adhered to the timetable.
The atmosphere was very supportive and friendly. The breakout room function on zoom was regularly used to enable us all to get to know each other and the organisers were all very helpful and eager to support us.
Teach first helped prepare us for the next steps in our career including the application process for their other programmes and who we can contact for support with these applications.
Teach first was unfortunately forced to deliver the taster experience online so could not replicate exact classroom environments. However, they did help us plan and deliver a lesson to our fellow peers which gave us a taste of what a full time role would entail.
Teach First were very clear on the company values and passion for helping children from disadvantaged backgrounds. We got to listen to talks from members of various charities and volunteering organisations which helped understand Teach First's goals.
The talks delivered by previous teach first ambassadors was very helpful in giving me insight into their careers and what my future career could look like if I went down the same route.
Everything Else
The taster experience was all delivered online
There was a welcome event prior to the actual taster experience which allowed us to get to know other members of the programme. There was also a quiz at the end of our first day to help us network. In addition, a facebook group was created so that we could keep in contact after the experience.
Teach First made the most of the Zoom functions to enable us to network as best we could through fun activities such as ice-breakers and quizzes.
Teach First had many people come to talk to us about extra-curricular activities that could boost our CV and also help the wider community. Many of these people worked for charities and volunteering organisations.
I would highly recommend this insight to anyone considering teaching and has a passion for helping society and students from underprivileged backgrounds.
