    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I volunteered at Age UK in St Austell last year and it truly was an amazing place and team to be apart of. The staff were lovely and answered any questions I had and listened if I had an idea when they were changing things around the store. They really do get you involved and Make you feel ever so welcome, I would very much recommend this place to work for! :)

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I very much felt valued as both a customer before and as a member of the team during my time there. The atmosphere created within the store was and is wonderful and we always had a laugh whilst sorting through donated items but we always got the job done and it felt great to be apart of such a great charity!

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • I received some guidance during my first couple of days on how to use the till, where to store and how to sort the donated items, how to price things and how to use the pricing machine, every little thing helped me become quite confident after about 3 days working there :D

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I feel I developed some valuable skills working there as I was able to successfully sort through items, learnt how to use a till and work with customers. I learnt that the customer always comes first and having such a positive vibe from all of us it was then not such a problem if a customer was unhappy with something because we had a positive confident team.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • Very well structured, everything had its own shelf or place on the shop floor and the way it was laid out made it very clear as to where to find specific items. Working in the back was also great, organised, a little messy at times but it wouldn’t stay like that for long as we would have plenty of us sorting it and bringing it out onto their appropriate shelves/baskets.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The atmosphere was wonderful, I would enter and I’d have a team of people happy to see me! It was always so warm and cosy and decorated well. There was always something new to look at what with having constant donations. We would always have customers come in with a smile due to the cute promotions we would have on sale at the front till.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • From the day I step foot in the doors, I was treated like any other team member, they all trained me up so I would know what I’m doing and would always be there to answer any questions I may have had, I really felt welcomed into their little family team.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • The insight definitely helped me understand what it would be like to work within the company as we had volunteers and paid workers working in the shop and regardless everyone was treated the same and made sure we all felt welcome in hope that we do later want to work with them or will recommend them.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • The insight helped very much as I was very much up to speed on what goals and expectations they wanted and I was pleased to be able to help with them. There were a few rules and regulations, just to keep staff and customers safe but it was mostly common sense. They always said to me, every team member and customer is valued, so keep the environment a clean and safe place to be for all. They were wonderful people to work with, taught me skills I would take into further retail or with them if I work for them in the future which I’d love to do!

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • Very valuable indeed, this experience has really helped me focus on what the customer wants and needs and how to approach difficult situations. I have learnt skills in retail now which has really made me enjoy working with customers and so hope that having this behind me is the experience I need to be able to work further with a great team such as Age UK as well as their customers.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • I worked here as a volunteer as part of my college course working within retail which has finally lead me to think that I would do well working with customers or in a retail atmosphere. I would very much like to volunteer in my own time to some more charities.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Yes of course, we had a Facebook messenger group just in case one of us couldn’t make it or were going to be late. We all got on to very well in fact most of use went to an Christmas party in the town meaning I got to meet the team members I would see very less of as my days would differ to theirs, but everyone got along so well. They are very likeable people, very approachable and easy to get along with.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • Very good indeed, we had a Christmas party together to get to know each other more outside the work place which helped when we went back to work and personally it helped with my self esteem and confidence around new people, they are a lovely team.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Yes, there were a few social parties, or meet ups in the town for a coffee, we would go for walks around the local park visiting pokestops and catching pokemon on our phones. Our interests never really clashed and no one would never bring anyone else down, rather help them back up instead.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Definitely and family members. I feel working for a charity is a very good deed in itself and working for one with such a wonderful team behind them makes it even more of a pleasant place to be. It helps build you up as a person for the better I found!
