    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I learnt a lot of good general working experience but I wouldn't say I was blown away with the experience that I had at Hays. I think if I was working in the larger offices like Cheapside I would have been given lots more opportunity's and learning experiences that could and probably would have made my experience a lot better.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • At the start I didn't really feel valued at all by my colleagues, if anything I felt like I didn't really need to be there and I was just a bit of a spare part. This changed towards the end of the placement but I think it should be like this from the start. We have the same expectations on us as any other employee so we should really be treated the same always.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The training was given at the start which was good, and then any other support I needed I would tend to have to continue to ask for, which is okay because it teaches you to try on your own before asking, which does help you learn what your supposed to be doing.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was pretty busy all the time, sometimes too busy which would be quite stressful, but that's better than not having enough to do. At the start of my placement I didn't have a lot to do do to the fact that I didn't really have a desk to run and I was just given a role to 'give me something to do' so that was boring , but as soon as I had a desk back I was busy again.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Besides the responsibility of running your own desk, which is kind of expected of everyone I didn't have any other sort of responsibilities. I think that if I was in a larger office this might have been different as there may have been more room for opportunities in different aspects of the business.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think that the overall discipline of working full time in a large organisation will benefit me for my last year of studies as its taught me how to be organised and have a good structured day. Back at university I will be way more likely to plan my day out and hopefully then get better results.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Its a fairly small office so it was quiet most of the time but everyone was very nice and the personalities of everyone made it fun. There was always some laughter in everyday and that made down days more bearable! Was definitely not a dull office at all! But everyone was focused when they needed to be.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I would say that at the start it was well organised with all of the training that is compulsory, and also as an intern here you are just part of the team like everyone else so there isn't really much to organise as you just do what everyone else does.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Minimally, I was told that Hays really look after there interns as they would love for us to return once we are finished at uni - so in that respect I think they could have done better doing that as I don't really know if I will want to come back to my office. Maybe if I could work in a larger office this might be different. Overall I was just kind of thrown in at the deep end and expected to get on like everyone else even thought I was completely new to everything

    2/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • If I could run a different desk in a different office that would maybe be appealing but I am just not sure if recruitment overall is for me. Perhaps if there are different opportunities that aren't a recruitment consultant I could be interested but I was never informed of any other opportunities that there are.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I experienced no outside social life with the other placement students as I was the only one in my office. Also the people I worked with didn't go out or socialise anyway so I had 0 social life with them, but I wasn't overall fussed about this anyway so it wasn't a big deal.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I live with my parents so I didn't experience any cost of living in that respect but the costs for lunch and parking is fairly reasonable. And you can always take lunch in with you if your having a cheap week. The area itself is quite a well off area but its definitely cheaper than working in the city

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife isn't the highlight of the town but the location has direct routes to other places that have a really good nightlife so its very easy to get around to other places for a good night out. Drink prices are actually very reasonable as well so its a cheaper night out.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There's lots of local gyms and community centres that hold different activities but other than that there aren't really any other activities outside of work. Don't really have much time to do activities after work anyway as the days are so long and your expected to work long hours most days.
