    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My work placement was both challenging and rewarding. I have been able run my own recruitment desk being exposed to business development through sales calls and meeting and developing relationships in order to win business. The industry leading training has also allowed me to continue my development both as a Recruitment Consultant and various transferable skills that I can utilise in my career.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt extremely valued both from colleagues in office and within the wider Hays community. From day one there was an emphasis and responsibility that I was able to run my own desk, doing the same job as if I would be starting a Graduate position. This has allowed me to gain first hand exposure within recruitment whilst being rewarded and recognised consistently for my hard work and wins.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given constant support both from my Line Manager through ongoing mentoring and reviews, alongside official Hays training. From Day one before I officially started my own desk, I was given a full weeks training from leading Consultants and Managers in Hays. This gave me initial confidence and skills even before I stared. My line Manger is also able to give me advice and support on a constant basis , with the wider managers also very approachable and sharing expertise.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Having the same emphasis as a Graduate position, I was able to run my own desk from day one. I was very busy doing this having key targets to meet such as sales calls, meetings and billing fees. This allowed me develop my time management extremely well - a key skill as a Recruitment Consultant.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given the same responsibility as any other Recruitment Consultant starting their career with Hays. I have key targets to meet, such a sales targets and total fees billed each period or month. With the strong emphasis on targets and sales, I was given responsibility to achieve this by running my own desk within the engineering sector.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed numerous skills during my placement year. The biggest key skill I developed was sales and business development skills. This was through key strategic sales calls, and meetings by demonstrating expertise as a Recruitment Consultant on both a Client and Candidate level. Alongside this, the exposure to a FTSE 250 company and the UK's leading Recruitment firm has exposed me to a fast paced business environment developing various skills and practices. This will in turn help with my final year of university and subsequent career path within business.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organized. There was block organized training throughout my placement year. This included a weeks training and stay over in Birmingham focusing on key skills and development as a Recruitment Consultant. I also had monthly reviews focusing on my development and receiving further mentoring and training throughout the year. Furthermore, I had the same responsibility as anyone else in the office allowing me to run my own desk and work independently.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes. There are a number of placement Students not just in my office but within the further offices in the Northwest Region. We get to meet up throughout different times of the year with the other offices and the social scene in my Liverpool office is very good after work on Fridays!

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • My office is based in Liverpool which compared nationally is very cheap among other large city's. With the amount of things to do, socially it is very reasonable with most nightclubs free to get into, even at weekends! Rent is reasonable for City Centre locations as well, with a mix of shared and unshared accommodation available.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Liverpool is renowned for its Nightlife. There is always something going on, throughout the week and of course at weekends. There are many clubs and bars to go to so you are spoilt for choice really. With 3 or 4 Universities in Liverpool, it is very Student friendly as well with most places offering free entry.

  • There were plenty of opportunities to get involved in socially outside of work. Typically everyone goes out for drinks after work on a Friday to celebrate the end of the week.
