    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Interesting industry to work for. My line manager always made sure I had work to do and treated me like a colleague. Giving me responsibility and chances to prove/test myself. In addition training was provided for me to improve my skills and career prospects. Employees were also friendly and approachable.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone at work was very friendly and happy to help me you out and also tutor professional development.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given lots of support by my managers in explaining work that needed to be done. We would then receive feedback afterwards about how well we did with the work or any changes we could improve on. We also did progress reports throughout the year to see how we were developing overall.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My work load could vary a lot between the weeks, some weeks would be insanely busy and some very slow.

    2/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given lots of responsibility. I was writing reports for the project that would then be signed off. Analysing data and having meetings to assure the quality of this data with lab leaders.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Learning to interact in a professional manner e.g. having meetings, sending professional emails. Learning to write in professional/legally safe ways. My confidence and conflict management skills also improved greatly during my time there.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • We had a friendly open plan office with friendly people who would always offer to grab you something from Greggs. Had some fun socials in the year with the office and also placement students from the rest of the company.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Once I was with my line manager everything went smoothly. However when dealing with the placement team it was much less so. Were I would be based were not confirmed until last minuet. In addition whenever I tried to contact the placement team I would not receive a reply for months. At the end of my placement there was supposed to be and interview to which no one ever contacted me to set up so I had to track people down myself.

    2/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company were happy to help/invest in training to help my professional development. Including and project management qualification.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Good pay and holiday. Training is provided/encouraged. Lovely area of the UK. Good opportunities for promotions.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The graduate society would do some events are there were office parties but in terms of doing something every weekend it could be a little quiet. If you want to get out and about id definately recommend a car as busses in Cumbria are appalling.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Activities and also food and drink are cheaper in the north. If you like to go walking in the fells then that is free bar the occasional car park meter.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Pubs and restaurants are good in the area. How ever if you are looking for a decent night club you would be hard pressed. If you like cheesy pop thought you’ll be fine.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were walking events, nights out and staff parties. There were also lectures put on about once a month to learn about a range of things. We would also go out for team drinks sometimes.
