The Role
I loved working at Sellafield Ltd, the experience was something I will never forget and my knowledge of physics application to a real-life working scenario has increased massively, compelling me to work in the physics industry (especially nuclear) when I am older. Working at Sellafield Ltd is something I can highly recommend to anyone, especially physics undergraduates.
I felt highly valued and respect by my coworkers. The work I completed was always given an explanation as to how it would benefit Sellafield Ltd, compelling me to strive for the best I could achieve. The office dynamic never felt tense, I felt like I could approach anyone regarding any problems.
Support and guidance were regularly given, other people in the office would even offer to help, the dynamic of how work is completed at Sellafield Ltd felt extremely team based to me, which in my opinion, gets the job done better and faster. The advice was always concise and well implemented.
I had a very good balance of work whilst at Sellafield Ltd, some days were busier than other but that is to be expected. Whenever I was running out of work, I asked for more. Whenever I had too much work, I asked about the deadline and had it extended (where possible).
I was given independancy, but worked closely with my managers and supervisors in order to make sure I was making the correct decisions. I was allowed to choose what work I did and when, arrange appointments/meetings with whom I wanted to and I was allowed to take my own approach to any given problem.
Sellafield Ltd will teach you problem-solving and people skills above anything else. Although some of your work may not feel the most mathematical at times, physics-based problems occur and must be solved. I feel my knowledge of physics helped me often during the placement and only improved whilst working at Sellafield Ltd.
The Company
It felt relaxed, but professional. I felt it was easy to approach anyone and ask for help and that means a lot to me as an employee. It never felt dull or tense, usually people were talking about their projects and everyone was happy to help and discuss their work.
Very well organised. All work was clearly laid out and managers/supervisors always helped if things didn't go to plan. Calling the resourcing team usually gave me an instanteous answer, so I would personally recommend that over e-mailing. Sellafield Ltd seem to get their organising done quickly, so I would recommend it definitely in that respect.
I was put on courses from the second day of work, in my opinion the company invested a lot into me for the short time I was there (ten weeks). Whilst there I did a week long course which ended in an exam, which my colleagues helped me pass in their free time.

I would love to work for Sellafield after seeing their graduate scheme prospects - I know I would be in a comfortable work environment where I would be able to progress as a worker and hopefully progress within the industry! Very appealing in my opinion, something I could see myself working in.
The Culture
The graduates organised internship events, often bar events, encouraging people to get out there and meet their collegues and workmates in a more relaxed environment. I attended many of these, eventually we started organising events between a group of friends and workmates. Overall, the social aspect was very good. I was always busy!
Food and drink in Cumbria are cheap, rent is also cheap if you don't mind the cheaper housing options. After organising a house share between two other people, I managed to pay £158/month excluding bills. Some of the nicer housing closer to the sea may cos more, but if you don't mind being half an hour out, it's cheap.
The nightlife in Whitehaven especially is pub-based, there isn't much in the way of nightclubs. Evenings are best spent down by the sea in a pub in my opinion, there are plenty of nice restaurants and takeaways around as well, I never felt bored whilst I was working there at all.
It's in the Lake District - just go outside and there is plenty to do! It's easily the most beautiful part of the UK in my opinion, there are plenty of outdoor-based activities and speaking to friends at the graduate meetups allowed me to find people with my interests also.
